Knight’s CDL Academy Classes are instructed by experienced truck drivers who are committed to helping you establish a successful driving career. Your training will include in-class sessions, range training, and hands on highway driving. Our academy classrooms are set up to maximize student comfort and include state-of-the-art audio/visual technology to assist with driver learning.

Before attending our CDL school, you must have a commercial learner’s permit, be prepared for previous employment verifications, background checks (criminal and driving record), and drug screens.

After obtaining your CDL and getting hired by Knight, industry leading over the road training with a qualified driver trainer will help you develop the experience needed for a long-lasting driving career.

Prepare to Get Your Class A CDL Permit

It All Starts With Your CLP

Study up before your CDL exam with these resources! Use your state’s CDL Manual along with the Clutch Driver Learning app to prepare for your commercial learner’s permit exam. The CDL test is a written exam taken at the DMV, applicants take the General Knowledge, Air Brakes and Combination test portions.

The DMV requires proof that the applicant is medically qualified. Before they will allow you to test, you must obtain a DOT Physical from any doctor (residents of Idaho are not required to have physical).

How to Become a Commercial Driver

The DMV will require that you are medically qualified and have obtained a DOT Physical from any DOT certified doctor (residents of Iowa are not required to have a physical if operating in excepted interstate commerce).

At the Knight CDL Academy, you will learn all applicable driving facets that will enable you to obtain your CDL and set you on the road to success. Continue your truck driving journey after graduation with Knight Transportation's OTR Training.

Academy Course Time: Between 3-4 weeks

Students can be hired after they graduate the CDL training program and obtain their CDL A. They must also attend Knight's Driver Qualification Process (DQP), and pass a physical and drug test before being hired.

This process may take up to one week.

After you are hired by Knight, you will begin your over the road training and get real-world experience.

This process may take two to six weeks.

After graduating CDL school and completing your OTR training with a driver trainer, you will begin driving solo.

Up to 6 weeks long.

30K miles is a big milestone, enjoy a pay increase! 

Once you complete 60k miles and meet a few other qualifications, you may apply to become a driver trainer!

Our CDL training facilities are located in Phoenix, AZ and Indianapolis, IN.

Tuition for the CDL course is $5,200.

If hired with Knight, pay off your schooling in 52 weeks and get reimbursed after 104 weeks of employment.

CDL Schooling is 3-4 weeks long.

Applicants are responsible for all travel expenses, including lodging. A recruiter can provide you with more details.

Some states do not accept our 3rd party program, therefore we cannot hire in all states.

We require an enrollment agreement and financial agreement for CDL school tuition and boarding if applicable.

After passing your road test with a 3rd party tester, you will take your passed forms to the DMV in your home state and they will license you locally. After being hired, you will be scheduled to go out on the road with a trainer for roughly 2-6 weeks and then become a solo driver.

Knight does not match you with a teammate. So after your training program, you will become a solo driver. However, if you hire on with a friend or family member you may team with them after 30k miles.

Yes. You are eligible to apply for the Lease Program 90 days after completing your first solo 30k miles.

We keep our class sizes small because we are focused on making sure each student has time to practice and learn the skills they need to pass their test and obtain their CDL. Expect no more than 15 students per class per week.

Driver's license, CDL Permit, legal documents, DOT medical exam certificate, clothing for your time here (we have washers & dryers), a jacket, work gloves, personal items, food money, etc.

Once you complete your first 30k solo miles, you are welcome to apply to have a rider and a pet on your truck - One passenger and one pet per truck. Pet Deposit required. Rider insurance required. Breed/size restrictions may apply. Ask your recruiter for details as policy is subject to change.

You must complete a full application and obtain your Class A learner’s permit from your home state prior to starting school.

Yes, all of our trucks are automatics that we use to train both on the range and on the road.
